Summer Term

English

We will be studying four main texts during this term:

My Boomerang Won't Come Back

The Smeds and Smoos

Diary of a Wombat

The Beach

Whilst studying these texts, we will be writing our own information texts about an Australian animal and writing our own instructions on how to use a boomerang. We will also continuing to work on our sentence structure and handwriting whilst we challenge ourselves to write our own narratives for a short animation film called 'Taking Flight'. We will be learning how to extend our sentences using 'and' or 'because' effectively and how to add in more detail using adjectives. We will be focusing on learning new words and extending our vocabulary throughout all of our English lessons which will help us write a setting description in Summer 2. With summer on the way, we will also be perfecting our letter/postcard writing skills.

We also have daily phonics lessons following the Read, Write, Inc programme.

Maths

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme. Our topics for this term are multiplication and division, fractions, position and direction, place value (within 100), money and time . During our maths lessons this Summer term, we will continue to practice counting forwards and backwards to 100, count in 2s, count in 5s, count in 10s and practice arithmetic questions.

Science

We are learning all about animals including humans this term in science. We will be naming/labelling the basic parts of the human body and will be able say which part of the body is associated with each of the five senses. We will be learning about a variety of animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. By the end of this topic we will be able to identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We will also continue to explore the changes in seasons as we move into Summer. We will observe seasonal changes in the weather, day length and record the changes to the plants and trees in our school grounds.

Religious Education

Our first topic in RE is called 'Resurrection' where we will learn about Jesus' resurrection on Easter Sunday, what this tells us about Jesus and what followed his resurrection, including the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Our second topic in RE this summer term is called 'Miracles' where we will learn about what a miracle is and how Jesus showed his love for people through the different miracles He performed. We will also learning about Buddhism in Summer 1 and other branches of Christianity in Summer 2.

History

Our focus is on the life of Florence Nightingale where we will research who she is, what she did and what makes her such a significant person in history. We will also be learning all about Neil Armstrong and the significance of the moon landings which opened up space exploration and allowed humans to learn a great deal about the planets and stars in space.

Geography

During geography this term, we will be exploring Australia as our new topic. We will be able to describe Australia's location on a map and name the capital city. We will also be naming some of the main cities, finding out what the outback is and will be able to talk about what makes Uluru distinctive.
